Just a few of the 5.17 million enterprise workers
The General Statistical Office has surveyed many Vietnamese enterprises and has provided vital statistics about their operations in recent years. The office's surveys indicate the steady, upward trend in the Vietnamese economy.
Soaring number of enterprises
The number of enterprises has increased fairly rapidly since 2001. The number by the end of 2003 was more than 2.6 times that of 1996, and 1.7 times higher than in 2001. The number of enterprises in the non-state and foreign investment sectors soared, while that of state enterprises dropped sharply as a result of re-organization, leasing and equitization (transformation into joint stock companies).
However, the real number of enterprises in operation is much lower than the registered figure, largely because a considerable number of registered enterprises have not yet started operation, or have not operated, or do not intend to in the future. The business rate is less than 0.9 enterprise per 1,000 residents, which is far below many other countries in Southeast Asia and the rest of the world, which indicates the Vietnamese market-based economy is still underdeveloped.
Total business scale increased
There were 5.17 million workers for enterprises by the end of 2003, which were more than 3.3 times higher than in 1995 and almost 1.5 times larger than in 2000.
In 2000-2003, the business sector generated almost two million jobs, not including those who replaced roughly 700,000 fired workers. However, workers in the business sector accounted for only 12 percent of total workers in Vietnam. There were 2.26 million workers in the state business sector in 2003, which accounted for 43.7 percent of the total number of workers in the business sector, compared with 48.5 percent in 2002.
Meanwhile, there were 2.05 million workers in the non-state sector in 2003, which accounted for 39.7 percent of the business sector total, and up by 19.9 percent against 2002. In addition, 0.86 million workers were employed in the foreign investment sector, which made up 16.6 percent compared with 14.8 percent in 2002. Each enterprise employed an average of 71.8 workers against 74 workers in 2002.
By the end of 2003, enterprises had a total capital of VND1.709 trillion, which was 1.54 times higher than at the beginning of 2000, and 18.6 percent higher than at the end of 2002. State enterprises owned VND1.003 trillion, or 58.7 percent of total, down from 62.1 percent in 2002. Each enterprise had an average of VND207 billion in 2003 compared with VND166.9 billion in 2002.
The non-state sector had VND337 trillion, making up 19.7 percent of total in 2003 against 16.5 percent in 2002. Each enterprise had an average of only VND5.2 billion compared with VND4.3 billion in 2002.
The foreign investment sector had VND369 trillion and represented 21.6 percent of total. Each enterprise in this field had an average of VND139.7 billion.
Average income also increased rapidly
The business sector earned an average of VND1.367 million per month per person in 2003, up by 9.4 percent against 2002 and much more than the private sector, household businesses, and the administrative sector.
Workers in the foreign investment sector earned the highest income, VND1.774 million, in 2003, which nevertheless was down by 6.5 percent from 2002. Workers for the state sector earned an average of VND1.495 million, which just followed the foreign investment sector and increased by 14.2 percent against 2002. Workers in the non-state sector earned the lowest income, VND1.046 million, which expanded, however, by 14.2 percent against 2002 and was higher than the administrative sector.
The increased income of workers in all business sectors contributed to improving the country's average living standard and to changing the worker structure in the direction of moving workers from the farming sector to non-farming sectors.
